Monolid Eye Makeup: Gradient Shadow, Bold Liner, Lifted Lashes

A smooth upper lid without a visible crease above the lashes.

Monolid eye makeup starts from a smooth lid with no crease, which means the classic tutorial move, blend a dark shade into the crease, has nowhere to go.

My own lids are creased, so for this one I sat with three friends who have monolids and watched them do their full routines. All three said the same within five minutes: stop following tutorials made for a crease. Everything below passed their inspection.

Quick answer

Monolid eye makeup works with gradient shadow that fades from dark at the lash line to light at the brow bone, liner mapped with the eyes open, and a hard lash curl, since monolid lashes often point downward. There is no crease to blend into, so build depth vertically instead.

What makes a monolid

A monolid has no supratarsal crease, so the upper lid runs in one smooth plane from the lashes to the brow. The lashes often angle downward, and the lid can sit close over the lash line. The monolid eyes guide covers the anatomy and the mirror check if you're unsure.

Why standard tutorials fail on monolids

Most Western tutorials build looks on a crease: transition shade in the socket, depth in the outer V, lid shade below. On a monolid there is no socket line to follow, so the shades blend into one another and read as a smudge. The fix is to stop blending sideways and start blending upward, building a gradient from the lash line.

Prep for a smooth lid

Monolid skin sits flat against itself less than a folded lid does, so creasing is gentler, but oil still breaks down pigment. A thin layer of primer, set with a skin-tone powder shadow, keeps the gradient in place through a full day. Skip heavy cream bases, which slide on a smooth lid.

Gradient eyeshadow, step by step

  1. Prime and set the lid.
  2. Press your deepest shade along the upper lash line with a flat brush, like a thick smudged liner.
  3. Blend that shade upward with a fluffy brush, fading it out before the brow bone.
  4. Add a medium shade above the first, overlapping the blend so no band shows.
  5. Finish with a light shade at the brow bone and a touch of shimmer at the center of the lid.
  6. Check the gradient with your eyes open, looking straight ahead. The color should read from lash line to mid-lid.

Two thin passes beat one heavy one. On a smooth lid, heavy pigment has no fold to hide in.

Eyeliner for monolids

  • Draw with your eyes open. The line's visible thickness changes completely between closed and open, so map it open.
  • Thickness is allowed. A monolid can carry a thicker band of liner than a creased lid, because the flat plane shows it cleanly. Three to five millimeters at the center reads as definition, not costume.
  • Puppy liner. Follow the natural angle of the lower lash line and extend the line a few millimeters past the corner, slightly down. It reads youthful and it suits the flat lid.
  • Winged liner works too. Angle up from the outer third toward the brow tail, the same way as other shapes.
  • Tightline the upper waterline with a pencil rated for it. On monolids this one step can double the definition, because the lash roots sit close to the lid's edge.

Lashes: the curl is the routine

Monolid lashes often grow straight or angled down, and the lid can press on them through the day. Curl in three stages, root, middle, tip, and hold each for a few seconds. Waterproof mascara holds the curl where regular formulas let it drop.

False lashes earn their keep here. A strip with a firm band can push the lid up into a temporary crease, and separate lash clusters at the center of the lash line open the eye without hiding the lid. Follow the glue directions and keep adhesive off the waterline.

Brows for monolids

A soft, fairly straight brow sits well above a smooth lid, and Korean beauty looks have leaned on that pairing for years. Keep the arch gentle and the edges feathered. A hard, high arch competes with the lid's clean plane.

Looks for monolid eyes

  • Everyday gradient. Brown at the lash line fading upward, tightlined lashes, one coat of waterproof mascara.
  • Monolid smoky eye. Deep brown or charcoal graded from the lash line to the mid-lid, with a light brow bone. The smooth lid shows a gradient better than any creased lid can.
  • Puppy liner. Soft pencil following the lower lash line out, with curled lashes. Ten minutes.
  • Floating liner. A graphic line drawn above where a crease would sit. Monolids carry this look because the lid gives it a blank wall.
  • Aegyo-sal highlight. A pale shimmer on the small puff directly under the lower lashes, a K-beauty staple that makes the eye read larger and friendlier.

Mistakes to skip

  • Blending a dark shade into a crease you don't have, then wondering where it went.
  • Skipping the lash curl. On downward-angled lashes, mascara alone can't lift.
  • One heavy band of shadow with a hard top edge. Blend the gradient until no line shows.
  • Drawing liner with your eyes closed. It lands in the wrong place the moment you open them.
  • Heavy lower liner all the way across, which closes the eye off.

Products worth having

  • A lash curler that fits your eye width, plus waterproof mascara to hold the curl.
  • A flat shader brush for packing color at the lash line, and a fluffy brush for the upward blend.
  • A gel or liquid liner that sets smudge-proof, since the lid rests close to the lash line.
  • Eyeshadow primer, applied thin.
  • Separate lash clusters, if you want lift without a full strip.

Frequently asked questions

How do you apply eyeshadow on monolids?

In a vertical gradient: deepest shade at the lash line, blended upward and faded before the brow bone. There is no crease to work into, so depth builds from the lashes up.

Can monolids wear winged eyeliner?

Yes. Draw the wing with your eyes open and angle it up from the outer third. Monolids also carry thicker liner bands than creased lids, so you have more room to play.

How do I make monolid eyes look bigger?

Curl the lashes in three stages, tightline the upper waterline, keep the gradient light toward the brow bone, and try a pale shimmer on the aegyo-sal under the lower lashes.

Is a monolid the same as a hooded eye?

No. A monolid has no crease at all. A hooded eye has a crease hidden under a fold of skin. The two overlap in how makeup behaves, and the hooded eye makeup guide shares some of these techniques.

What mascara works best on monolid lashes?

A waterproof formula that holds a curl. Monolid lashes often point downward, and regular mascara lets the curl fall within the hour.
