How many Kibbe body types are there?

The current system has 10 Image Identities

The current list contains two identities in each of five families. Dramatic and Romantic remain both family names and identity names. The Natural, Classic, and Gamine families now contain two choices each.

• Dramatic family: Dramatic and Soft Dramatic.
• Natural family: Flamboyant Natural and Soft Natural.
• Classic family: Dramatic Classic and Soft Classic.
• Gamine family: Flamboyant Gamine and Soft Gamine.
• Romantic family: Theatrical Romantic and Romantic.

Why do older Kibbe charts show 13?

David Kibbe's 1987 book, Metamorphosis, organized the system around 13 identities. The list included three balanced, or 'pure,' options: Natural, Classic, and Gamine.

Kibbe later stopped using those three as standalone identities. This reduced the working list from 13 to 10 without removing the Natural, Classic, or Gamine families. A person looking within one of those families now considers its two current identities.

Which number should you use?

Use 10 when you are following the current Image Identity system. Use 13 only when you are reading the 1987 framework, comparing an older chart, or tracing how the system changed.

A result of pure Natural, pure Classic, or pure Gamine usually signals an older test. It does not mean the test found an eleventh, twelfth, or thirteenth current identity. Check the neighboring identities in the same family instead.

Why 'Image Identity' is the clearer name

People search for Kibbe body types, but the official term is Image Identity. The distinction helps because Kibbe is not a body-shape chart built from bust, waist, and hip measurements. It considers the full visual composition and the clothing lines which support it.

The number of identities answers how many style directions the system names. It does not divide bodies into 10 fixed shapes.
