Round Eyes: How to Tell If You Have Them + Best Makeup Looks

Relax your face in the mirror and look straight ahead. If a sliver of white sits below each iris and the outer corners curve around instead of tapering to a point, you have round eyes.

The shape reads open and expressive, and it takes makeup well once you know what to stretch. Size is a separate question, because round eyes come large and small.

What are round eyes?

Round eyes have a circular outline, more visible white around the iris, and little upward taper at the outer corner. They look open and wide-awake at rest. Makeup that stretches them outward and upward adds the look of length.

How to tell if you have round eyes

  1. Face a window or a bright lamp, relax, and look straight ahead without squinting.
  2. Look at the iris. White below it, above it, or both points to round eyes. If the lids touch the iris on top and bottom, you're closer to almond.
  3. Trace the outer corner. A curved, softly rounded end reads round. A sharp taper up toward the temple reads almond.
  4. Compare height to width. Round eyes tend to look taller for their width than an almond eye does.

A small round eye is still round, and a large almond eye is still almond. Expression moves things too, since a surprised face shows white above the iris on nearly anyone.

Round eyes vs almond eyes

Almond eyes taper at the outer corner and the lids cover the top and bottom edge of the iris. Round eyes curve, and white shows around the iris. That's the whole difference, and plenty of people sit somewhere between.

Round eyes vs hooded eyes

Round describes the outline. Hooded describes whether skin from the brow bone folds over the crease and hides the lid. A round hooded eye shows its curve along the lower lash line and loses the upper arc to the fold. The hooded eyes guide has a 30-second check if you're unsure.

You'll also hear 'doe eyes' for large, round, wide-open eyes. It's an informal nickname and nobody uses it as a separate shape.

Best makeup for round eyes

The goal is length. Color circled around the lid and liner traced all the way around the eye both repeat the round outline, so move the weight outward.

  • Elongating shadow. Put your darker shade at the outer corner and blend it up and out toward the end of the brow in a V. Keep the center of the lid lighter.
  • Horizontal blending. Sweep the brush back and forth along the lash line, going outward. Circles round things off.
  • Liner that extends. Thin at the inner corner, thicker at the outer corner, finishing in a wing that continues the line of the lower lashes.
  • A dark ring of liner all around the eye closes the circle.
  • Lower lash line. Smudge soft shadow along the outer third and connect it to the outer corner. Leave the inner half light.

Eyeliner for round eyes

  • Winged liner. Follow the angle of your lower lash line past the corner. A short, clean wing lifts and lengthens at once.
  • Outer-corner flick. Quick option for mornings. Tiny strokes, stop early.
  • Tightlining. Lining the upper waterline defines the lashes without adding visible line, and you'll want a pencil labeled safe for that area.
  • Cat-eye placement. Start the flick at the outer third and aim at the tail of the brow.

Round-eye makeup looks

  • Everyday. Matte taupe at the outer corner, mascara on the outer lashes, and nothing else.
  • Soft smoky wing. Smudged brown liner ending in a short wing, with shadow in the same shade blended upward.
  • Round monolid or low-crease eyes. Gradient shadow from the lash line up, deepest at the outer third, since there's no crease to guide the blend.
  • Color. Deep plum or green in the outer V with a light shade across the lid.

Lashes and brows for round eyes

Lashes with the longest hairs at the outer corner stretch the outline, and angled strips are built for that. Mascara weighted to the outer third does the same job. For brows, a soft arch with a slight lift toward the tail echoes the length you're building. I'd skip a tall, rounded arch right above the iris, since it repeats the circle.

Glasses for round eyes

Rectangular, angular, cat-eye, and geometric frames add the straight lines round eyes lack. Round frames repeat the curve, which can look soft and sweet, so wear them if you love them. Whatever the shape, check that the bridge width fits your nose.

Frequently asked questions

Are round eyes attractive?

Many people find them appealing, and many admired faces have almond, hooded, or deep-set eyes instead. Round eyes read open and expressive in photos. That's a mood, and it isn't a ranking.

How do I make round eyes look almond-shaped?

Pull the outer corner out and up with a wing and a V of shadow, keep the center of the lid light, and put mascara on the outer lashes. It changes how the outline photographs. Your anatomy stays as it is, which is fine.

What eyeliner suits round eyes?

Winged liner, an outer-corner flick, or a tightlined upper lash line, all kept thin at the inner corner. Use products labeled safe for the waterline if you line there.

Can round eyes wear heavy eyeliner?

Yes, with a plan. Put the weight at the outer third and extend it outward. A thick black ring around the whole eye makes it look rounder and smaller.
