Wide-Set Eyes: How to Know If You Have Them + Makeup for Balance
If another eye of the same size would fit between your inner corners with room to spare, you have wide-set eyes.
A wide gap reads calm and open on camera, which plenty of people like. The makeup question is balance. A few small moves on the lid, brows, and frames keep attention from drifting to the sides.
What are wide-set eyes?
Wide-set eyes have more than one eye width between the inner corners. The face reads open and attention spreads outward. Darker color toward the nose and brows that start slightly closer in bring the focus back to the center. A defined frame bridge helps too.

How to know if you have wide-set eyes
- Take a straight-on photo with your head level, your face relaxed, and the camera at eye level.
- Mark the inner and outer corners of one eye. That distance is your ruler.
- Slide the ruler into the gap between your inner corners. Room left over means wide-set. A match means average spacing.
The label describes spacing and nothing else. Eyes that bulge forward are protruding, and eyes tucked under the brow bone are deep-set. Both can show up alongside wide-set eyes.
When the gap is a medical question
Markedly increased distance between the eyes has a clinical name, hypertelorism, and doctors diagnose it with measurements and an exam. A photo can't separate a family trait from a medical finding. Ask a doctor if the spacing is new or comes with other changes.
Wide-set vs close-set eyes
| Wide-set eyes | Close-set eyes | |
|---|---|---|
| Gap between inner corners | More than one eye width | Less than one eye width |
| Effect on the face | Attention spreads outward | Attention gathers at the center |
| Shadow | Deeper toward the nose, lighter at the outer corner | Light at the inner corner, deeper outward |
| Liner wing | Short or skipped | Longer and lifted |
| Brow fronts | Slightly closer in | Slightly farther apart |
| Frame bridge | Darker or detailed | Light or clear |
The close-set eyes guide runs the same plan in reverse.
Wide-set eyes and eye shape
Wide-set tells you where the eyes sit. Almond, round, and hooded tell you what each eye looks like. You can have any pairing.
- Wide-set almond. Long tapered eyes with space between. A short wing keeps the length from stretching toward the temples.
- Wide-set round. Open eyes with extra white around the iris and a lot of face between them. The round eyes guide has the outline details.
- Wide-set hooded. Put definition on the inner half of the lid above the fold, where it also draws the eyes in. More in the hooded eyes guide.
A tapered opening and eye spacing are separate features. This portrait shows a tapered outline; check the inner-corner gap on your own straight-on photo before choosing a spacing label.
Best makeup for wide-set eyes
- Darker toward the nose. Put your deeper shade across the inner half of the lid and the inner V, then blend it softly up and out so it doesn't sit as a stripe.
- Highlight the center. A satin or shimmer shade in the middle of the lid catches light exactly where you want the eye to rest.
- Keep the outer corner lighter. Heavy shadow at the temple end stretches the face sideways.
- Nose contour. A slightly deeper contour that starts near the inner corners brings the eyes closer, as long as you blend the edges until you can't see where it begins.
Eyeliner for wide-set eyes
- Define the lash line from the inner corner to the middle at normal thickness.
- Short wing. Stop a few millimeters past the outer corner, or skip the wing and smudge the outer third. Long flicks widen the spread.
- A smudged pencil along the inner third of the lower lash line adds definition near the nose.
Eyebrows for wide-set eyes
- Begin each brow at the nostril line, or right inside it. If your natural hairs stop short, fill the front toward the nose with light strokes.
- Leave the inner edge alone when you tweeze. Extra space between the brows widens the face further.
- End the tail near the line running from the nostril through the outer corner of the eye. A long tail adds width.
Lashes for wide-set eyes
Put the volume on the inner and center lashes. Two coats there, one at the outer corner. Short accent lashes at the inner corner can balance the gap, though you should follow the manufacturer's glue and placement directions closely near the lash line.
Best glasses for wide-set eyes
Check the stamp inside the temple arm, for example 50-20-140, where the middle figure is the bridge width in millimeters.
- A darker, thicker, or decorated bridge pulls the eye toward the center.
- Frames that finish narrow at the outer edge reduce the spread. Oversized frames that stick out past the temples add width.
- A narrower bridge helps only if it still fits your nose. One that's too tight leaves marks and slides.
- Get your pupillary distance measured before ordering prescription lenses. Wide-set eyes often need a frame wide enough for the lens centers to land on the pupils.
Hairstyles for wide-set eyes
Center parts and curtain bangs that start at the brow and sweep outward soften the width. Fullness near the middle of the forehead helps too. Hair swept straight back shows the full spacing, so lean on a defined brow when you wear it that way.
Frequently asked questions
Are wide-set eyes attractive?
Faces with wide-set eyes show up on magazine covers and in family photos alike. Spacing is one proportion among many, and what people remember about a face is usually its expression.
What makeup makes wide-set eyes look closer together?
Deeper shadow across the inner half of the lid, a lighter outer corner, liner that stops near the corner, brows that start slightly closer in, and a nose contour blended from the inner corners.
Do wide-set eyes look good with winged liner?
Yes, with a short wing. Keep it a few millimeters past the corner and angle it along the lower lash line so it doesn't stretch the eye sideways.
Can brow shape change eye spacing?
It changes how the spacing looks. Moving the brow fronts closer or farther apart shifts attention, and the effect shows clearly in photos. The measured distance between the eyes stays the same.
