How accurate are face shape detectors?

Two separate questions

'Did it measure my face correctly?' and 'did it pick the right label?' are different questions. Landmark mapping and ratio measurement repeat reliably across good photos. Where the line falls between round and oval is a judgment call, and stylists, printed charts, and software all draw it in slightly different places.

What throws the result off

• Head tilt and rotation. A small turn shortens one side of the face and shifts the cheekbone measurement.
• Uneven light. Side and overhead lighting hides the jaw edge, so the jaw measures narrower than it is.
• Hair over the forehead, cheeks, or jaw. Covered edges get estimated instead of measured.
• Close-range selfies. An arm's length or nearer stretches the middle of the face and flattens the outline.
• A wide smile. It lifts the cheeks and widens the lower face.
• Filters and retouching. Smoothing and slimming effects reshape the exact outline the detector reads.

What the confidence score tells you

A high score means your ratios landed clearly inside one shape. A low score means you sit near a boundary between two, which is common and is not a failure. Borrow styling ideas from both neighbors instead of forcing one label.

How to get a cleaner read

• Shoot straight on at eye height, camera at arm's length or further.
• Use even, front-facing light such as a window.
• Tie your hair back and clear your forehead.
• Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed.
• Run two or three photos. Matching results mean the read is solid; different results mean you are on a boundary.

Where the numbers beat the label

Even when the label is debatable, the ratios hold. Knowing your face runs 1.4 times longer than it is wide, with a jaw narrower than your cheekbones, is enough to choose a haircut or a frame width. Work from the measurements whenever the shape is a close call.
