Kibbe question answered

What Kibbe body type is pear-shaped?

Short answer

A pear-shaped figure does not map to one Kibbe body type. Pear shape describes hips which read wider than the upper body, while Kibbe considers vertical, width, curve, balance, petite, and the full visual composition. People with a pear outline can land in different Image Identities.

The five Kibbe families organize the 10 current Image Identities.

Pear shape uses a partial outline

Body-shape systems compare selected widths and describe where the outline carries more volume. That can help with garment fit, but it leaves out several relationships used in Kibbe.

Two people with similar hip and shoulder measurements can differ in height impression, upper-frame width, compact scale, balance, and the way fabric needs to move around curve.

Hip width does not identify curve on its own

Kibbe curve is a clothing accommodation, not a synonym for wide hips. The question is whether the silhouette needs room and shaping around curve as part of the complete line.

A pear outline can also coexist with a strong vertical, an open upper frame, balanced proportions, or petite scale. The dominant relationship changes the clothing direction.

Compare these clothing needs

  • Does a long continuous silhouette organize the outfit first?
  • Does the upper frame need openness and relaxed construction?
  • Do even, moderate proportions make the full look settle?
  • Does compact scale need cropped shapes and short visual sections?
  • Does curve lead the silhouette from top to bottom?

Use both systems for different jobs

Pear-shape advice can help you solve fit differences between a garment's waist and hip. Kibbe can help you choose the larger silhouette and visual scale.

You do not need to force the two labels into a one-to-one match. Keep the pear description for fit and use outfit comparisons to find an Image Identity.
